Andrea Baruffi

Andrea Baruffi was born in Bologna, in Lizzano Belvedere in 1949.

He attended Art school in Bologna and in 1975 graduated in Architecture in Florence. Two years later, he moved to the United States and became an established graphic designer, working with reputed New York magazines and papers. He collaborated with big names like the New York Times, Daily News, Newsweek, Time and some of the most important American advertising Agencies (Young & Rubicam, Grey Advertising, Ogilvy & Mather, J. Walter Thompson and others). He was the curator of the national ad campaign for Artemide of America, and for Blue Cross Blue Shield (Health Insurance Co.). Fame came his way with the Art Direction Award for the Dover Corporation Annual Report in 1985. His deft ability as a graphic designer, illustrator and his creativity in the field of advertising got him some important international awards. Starting in 1991, his artwork was conceived with digital images.

But a shift occurred in 1993 when he began to fully devote himself to painting, taking part in many modern art exhibits. His work carries is reminiscent of William Hopper’s artwork, but with a distinctive elegantly ironic and the surreal note.

Some of his most significant personal exhibitions in Europe include Gubbio (at Palazzo dei Consoli), Bologna (L’Ariete Arte Contemporanea), Milan (Silbernagl Undergallery), his participation to Artissima in Turin, Miart in Milan, Parma Museum, St’Art Strasbourg (F), Lineart Gent (B), Holland Art Fair Den Haag (NL), and ArtWien Vienna (A). His latest cycle of paintings and graphic work, achieved in 2002, were made for the new Children’s Cardiology and Cardiac surgery ward at the hospital of S.Orsola, Bologna, and for the Health House called Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza created by Padre Pio, in San Giovanni Rotondo.
